Gut Health & Hormone Balance
Frequently clients say, "Meg, my hormones feel so out of balance." I respond by asking, "What's going on with your gut?"
When women reach out for my help, whether they’re here in Atlanta or across the country, that’s how nearly every conversation begins. They’re struggling with mood swings, fatigue, weight gain, but as we talk, a deeper pattern always emerges: underlying gut issues. Constant gas and bloating, constipation or loose stools, heartburn, brain fog and exhaustion are the quiet signals that your gut and hormones are out of balance. Does any this sound familiar? It may be time to consider The Gut–Hormone Reset Program!
A healthy gut is essential for balanced hormones, influencing everything from your menstrual cycle and ovulation to your transition through perimenopause and menopause. Your gut microbiome also plays a vital role in hormone regulation, detoxification, and metabolic health.
Many women don’t realize that hidden digestive imbalances, low stomach acid, sluggish bile flow, SIBO, candida, parasites, or celiac disease, can keep your body in a state of inflammation and hormonal chaos.
When the gut lining becomes permeable (a condition known as leaky gut), toxins and bacteria slip into the bloodstream, triggering immune and hormonal responses that can lead to PMS, infertility, PCOS, fibroids, or even debilitating hot flashes, night sweats and insomnia.

You Can't Balance Your Hormones Without Repairing Your Gut
Your gut and hormones are in constant communication every day, every hour, with every meal. When that communication breaks down, everything can feel off.
Most women I work with are living with some degree of dysbiosis, an imbalance of good and bad gut bacteria, or leaky gut, where the intestinal lining becomes more permeable. Both conditions drive inflammation, disrupt hormone signaling, and can keep your body stuck in a cycle of fatigue, mood changes, sugar cravings, and feeling like you’re on a hormonal rollercoaster.
Your gut microbiome is a living, breathing ecosystem of trillions of bacteria, fungi, and viruses that influence far more than digestion. It supports immunity, fertility, metabolism, detoxification, and hormone regulation. Your microbiome also helps convert thyroid hormone T4 into its active form T3 and produces neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine, and GABA — the chemistry of joy, motivation, and calm.
When your gut is compromised, inflammation increases, detoxification becomes sluggish causing your hormones fall out of balance.
Dysbiosis and leaky gut syndrome
can do funky things to your gut, hormones, mood and why you may feel like you're
spinning your wheels.
Dysbiosis and Women’s Hormonal Health
Your gut microbiome is a delicate balance of beneficial bacteria and potentially harmful microbes. When this balance is disrupted by a diet high in processed foods, chronic stress, constipation, antibiotic use, toxin exposure, or even a single bout of food poisoning causing dysbiosis— an imbalance in the gut microbiome, characterized by a decrease in beneficial bacteria and an overgrowth of bad bacteria.
This imbalance can lead to inflammation and influence more than just your digestive system and sex hormones (estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone). It can also contribute to insulin resistance, elevated cholesterol, unexplained autoimmune symptoms, mood swings, and a heightened stress response. But its most profound impact on women’s health lies in how it interferes with one specific hormone: estrogen.
The Estrobolome: Your Gut-Estrogen Connection
The estrobolome is the collection of genes within your gut microbiome that metabolize and eliminate estrogen. When dysbiosis develops from factors such as poor diet, stress, antibiotics, constipation, mycotoxins, or food poisoning, this system becomes impaired.
This leads to elevated levels of beta-glucuronidase, an enzyme produced by bad bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract and a major marker of gut dysbiosis. Beta-glucuronidase prevents estrogen from being properly excreted through the bowels, allowing it to recirculate into the bloodstream. This is why it’s important for women to have 2 to 3 daily bowel movements to ensure hormones are eliminated effectively— supporting gut and hormone balance.
Are You Experiencing Symptoms of Estrogen Imbalance?
When your estrobolome is out of balance and beta-glucuronidase levels rise, estrogen dominance can show up in a variety of ways:
• Menstrual issues: Irregular cycles, heavy or painful periods, severe PMS/PMDD, and clotting.
• Hormonal conditions: PCOS, endometriosis, fibroids, ovarian cysts, and infertility.
• Body composition changes: Stubborn weight gain (especially around the hips and thighs) and breast tenderness.
• Metabolic and mood symptoms: Decreased libido, mood swings, anxiety, or even Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD).
Symptoms are simply your bodys way of signaling that your gut-hormone axis is under stress and needs support.
Leaky Gut—Leaky Hormones
Your small intestine stretches about 20 feet in length and has a surface area roughly the size of a tennis court. It’s lined by a single layer of cells held together by tight junctions—microscopic structures that act as gatekeepers, deciding what enters your bloodstream and what stays out.
A small but mighty protein called zonulin regulates these junctions, controlling how permeable the intestinal wall becomes. Under healthy conditions, zonulin maintains a strong yet flexible barrier. But when levels rise, often triggered by gluten, toxins, or gut infections—the “doors” open too wide, allowing bacteria, undigested food particles, and toxins to slip into circulation.
Think of it as a floodgate in a storm. Instead of protecting your inner terrain, it releases a surge of debris into the bloodstream that can overwhelm the immune system. Over time, this chronic, low-grade inflammation disrupts hormone metabolism, stresses detoxification pathways, and weakens the body’s ability to maintain balance.
For women, this can manifest as painful or heavy periods, fatigue, anxiety, brain fog, cystic acne, fibroids, or challenges with fertility and recurrent miscarriage. Elevated zonulin is now recognized as an early biomarker of leaky gut and a warning sign for potential autoimmune disorders like lupus, Hashimoto’s disease or ulcerative colitis
Supporting gut repair is essential for regulating hormones, maintaining a steady mood, improving energy, and keeping autoimmune issues at bay by reducing inflammation at its source.
When your gut barrier is strong, your body can detoxify with greater ease, regulate hormones, support a balanced mood, and build a resilient metabolism that allows you to thrive.
